This conference has been one of, if not the best, weeks of my life. Getting the opportunity to meet with teenagers who share my interests was totally amazing. Back in Missouri, you’re lucky to find one or even two kids your age who share common interests. Asking Hoda, Chuck Todd, and Jessica Yellin questions relating to media was the most amazing thing about this conference. I would have paid the full conference amount for JUST that day. I really hope to come back next year as an intern. I love this area and the hospitality that comes with it. Any aspiring journalists who may be reading this needs to apply for this one of a kind, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Newseum

For aspiring journalists, walking into the Newseum is comparable to entering the gates of Heaven. Your eyes are stunned by amazement around each and every corner. Out of all seven floors, the third floor was my favorite as it was dedicated to broadcast. The thing that struck me most was the Tim Russert Gallery. There sat Mr. Russert’s desk (the one he collapsed at then later died due to a massive heart attack); I could have sat and stared at that wooden structure all day if time allowed. Another one of my favorite most heartfelt exhibits was the 9/11 gallery. Protruding from the ground was part of the mast that stood atop one of the towers. I visited Ground Zero two years back, and today I relived the flow of emotions I experienced while in New York City. The Newseum is by far the best museum in the WORLD and I will definitely recommend the “showcase of news history” to anyone, anyday.

Today, I also had the opportunity to meet with USA TODAY Crime Reporter, Donna Leinwand. I spoke with her regarding the much needed upgrade to my high school’s journalism department. Once I told her my story, she offered to help. Mrs. Leinwand handed me her contact information and told me to contact her with any questions, which really meant a lot. I mean, come on. How many high schoolers have the business card of a USA Today reporter?! =)

Washington Journalism and Media Conference

Journalism: It’s been an interest of mine since I can remember. As I kid, I would always tour the local affiliates, bugging the heck out of news anchors and reporters. Little did I know that passion I’ve held for a mere 18 years would lead to me the great state of Virginia…

July 10th, 2001: Washington Journalism and Media Conference BEGINS.

Today, I met with my color group (go, blue!) to mingle and discuss the issues facing all forms of journalism. Issues such as the Casey Anthony trial and Anthony Weiner scandal were brought to the table (I could go on and on about this, but I must hit the hay here in a shot while). We then went to dinner where we listened to a man by the name of Chris Cilliza, author of, “The Fix” talk about the future and integrity of journalism. He is a very inspirational speaker with wise words. We then met in out color groups to talk about the week’s activities and how we should behave while out in public.

As I’m sitting here writing this blog, I cannot thank God enough for all he has provided me in the past couple years. He is truly great and the one who deserves all the credit.
